More than 17,000 times a day investors switch brokers or brokerage firms for a variety of reasons. But more often than not the process doesn't flow smoothly.
From 2004 to 2006, brokerage firms have received more than 6,000 investor complaints.
In a perfect scenario, moving your assets can take 6 to 10 days. Now if you have an IRA, margin loans or firm-owned mutual funds, it may take 2 weeks or more.
You can minimize delays by checking and double checking the transfer form you fill out to be sure your account number is correct.
Also be sure that the firm's internal account numbers match the numbers on your statement. Some firms use two different numbers which can stop a transfer cold.
Then stay on top of the situation by calling regularly to see how it's going.
Be the squeaky wheel!
If you're still having problems, threaten to complain to the NASD. Trust us, firms don't want to be reported.
