I live in Arizona and my electric bill is a challenge. One thing that helps is to buy inexpensive solar curtains and put them up on the windows. You can see out just fine, but the curtains keep out some of the heat. You can buy cheap spring rods to put up the curtains. I bought my solar drapes for $3.99 each from a catalogue.
Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Utility Bill
We love to bring you ways to save money that are proven to work and easy to do. So today we bring you 10 ways to save money on your utility bill.
The money-saving tips are so simple that you can do them all in the next 10 minutes. You won't need a single tool to do any of them. And best yet, you won't have to sacrifice a thing!
1. Fill ‘er up. Don't run the dishwasher unless it's full. Ditto for the washing machine. You'll also save money by keeping your freezer full.
2. Go to sleep. Don't leave your computer running when you aren't using it! Computers are HUGE energy hogs. Shut down your computer when you aren't using it, or at least have it set to enter "sleep" mode automatically after 20 minutes of inactivity.
3. Gimme space. Move furniture away from air vents. Having a big old sofa sitting on top of your vent isn't going to help circulate the heat or air conditioning. Keeping vents clear of furniture and drapes will help your system work more efficiently.
4. Get ‘em while they're hot. Clean your oven. It costs less to heat a clean oven than one with caked on dirt. If you have a self-cleaning oven, clean it right after you have cooked so the oven is already hot and takes less energy to heat up.
5. Go mobile. If you are in the market for a new computer, keep in mind that a laptop uses 80% less energy than a desktop.
6. Location, location, location. Keep lamps, TVs, clothes dryers and other electronic equipment that gives off heat away from your thermostat. The thermostat will think your house is hotter than it is and not control your air conditioning or heating unit properly.
7. Two's a crowd. Unplug that extra refrigerator or freezer. These are two of the most expensive appliances to run, so don't use a second refrigerator or freezer unless you make good use of it.
8. Here's a bright idea...You've heard this before, but it's worth repeating: swap out traditional bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs and cut your electricity usage by 66%!
9. Bottle up savings. Drop a plastic bottle in your toilet's water tank and cut your water usage by 10 gallons a day.
10. Close the door! How many times did your mother yell "Close the door!" when you were a kid? Well, she was right, and the same advice applies in the kitchen. Keep the refrigerator door closed and the oven door closed to save energy. Every time you open the oven to peek, the temperature drops x degrees and has to heat back up again.
There you have it, 10 super simple ways you can save money on your utility bills starting today.
