This Dog Won't Hunt

If you think you've heard it all from the morons in Congress...to quote Al Jolson, "You ain't heard nothing yet."

Rising quickly to the top of the "stupid" pile is a tax proposal from Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Michigan).

Mr. McCotter has come up with the brainy idea to give pet owners a tax deduction/exemption/credit (fill in the blank) for owning a pet. Called The Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act, this bill, if passed, would offer owners of pets a tax break of $3500 a year for money spent in caring for or pampering pets.

Last time I checked, parents of dependent children only receive the same $3500 exemption for a child who, over a year, certainly costs a lot more than the exemption provided and, in almost every case that we can think of, costs a boatload more to raise than Fluffy or Fido.

We know because we've raised both!

Mr. McCotter's home state of Michigan, which he is paid to represent in the House, is circling the economic drain and this is the best he can come up with??

The country is mired in unemployment, uncertain of the future impact of health care reform, watching continuing home foreclosures across the nation and wondering why Johnny still can't read with all the money thrown at education. But this guy is worried about a tax break for pet owners !?!

Don't get us wrong. We love animals. One of the saddest days of our family life was when our dog Punkin died. But, with all the economic challenges facing our country, The HAPPY Act is just the latest manifestation of the foolishness in Washington which should lead to term limits.

When we start treating children and animals equally under the tax laws, it's time to completely overhaul the system.

Check out REAL ways to save on your 2009 taxes!
