Tips for Securing Financial Aid for College

Our friend and frequent guest on our national radio show, Kal Chany is president of Campus Consultants and author of our favorite book on college financial aid, "Paying for College Without Going Broke," 2007 edition.

He passed along a funding college tip that we think you should know.

Don't hesitate to apply for financial aid, even if you think you make too much money. Fill out the financial aid forms anyway.

Billions of dollars of aid goes unused every year. You might qualify for a needs-based aid package if your child has their eye on an ultra-expensive college or university. And the income ceiling to qualify for financial aid may significantly rise if you have more than one child in college at the same time.

Child Savings Accounts

When opening a savings account for your child, make sure their Social Security number is used as the account's tax identification number. That way, as long as your child is under age 14, interest earned will be taxed at your child's lower tax rate, not at your tax rate. This rule holds true as long as your child earns less than $1,300 a year in interest.
