$4-a-gallon gasoline empties all of our pockets
All summer long we watched the price of gasoline climb…and climb…and climb. The cost of a barrel of oil crossed the $150 mark in July, and everyone started cutting back on their consumption. We drove slower, we carpooled, and we grouped our errands together to use less gas. Thankfully, the prices have since come down, but we’re all still paying way too much at the pump. Even so, we can all look forward to higher heating bills as we try to stay warm this winter. And what’s more, no one seems to know how to prevent future spikes.

Child Savings AccountsWhen opening a savings account for your child, make sure their Social Security number is used as the account's tax identification number. That way, as long as your child is under age 14, interest earned will be taxed at your child's lower tax rate, not at your tax rate. This rule holds true as long as your child earns less than $1,800 a year in interest. |
