Where to Stay When Traveling Near and Far
Every year, hotels add more and more perks to woo business travelers. Several chains have built entire hotels with nothing but suites to make your business travel more comfortable. But most business guests only stay during weekdays. That means you can get super weekend bargains on posh suites (even for extended weekends).
Two chains with great offers (call them and ask for specific rates and availability) are Embassy Suites (800/362-2779) and Marriott Suites Hotels (800/228-9290). Both chains offer suites with a separate living room and bedroom, and many have a wet bar and kitchenettes. Now all you have to decide is whether you want to bring the kids—or NOT.
Smart Money Move: When you're making hotel reservations, don't call the chain's 800#. Call the individual hotel instead and try to bargain with them on your room rate. Since the folks at the individual hotel know how many rooms are still empty, they are in a better position to cut you a deal. When you arrive at the hotel, try to bargain again. Remember the hotel creed: no guests, no money.
"Abroad"er Vacation Experience
If you're traveling abroad, hotels aren't your only option. Here are three ways to save money and get to know your vacation spot from a unique point of view:
1. Home Swap programs. Believe it or not, thousands of Europeans want you to stay in their homes during your visit overseas. Of course, they won't be there—they'll be at your house! You can arrange this type of home swap through exchange services such as Intervac International & U.S.A. Home Exchange (800/756-HOME).
2. Rent an apartment. You can save money and enjoy a little luxury by taking this route. Renting an apartment can be especially cost-effective for families. If you don't mind doing a little work, you can save big bucks by cooking and doing laundry.
